KONNWEI KW650 – Car Battery Tester 12V (100–2000 CCA) for health check, cranking test & charging test
Short Version – Quick Overview
KONNWEI KW650 is a modern 12V battery tester with a 2.4” color screen that quickly analyzes battery health, cranking ability, and charging system. It measures according to international standards (e.g., CCA/BCI/CA/MCA/JIS/DIN/IEC/EN/SAE) in the range of 100–2000 CCA, and requires no built-in batteries – it is powered directly by the vehicle's battery (6–16V). The result is clearly indicated as Good, Recharge, or Replace and is supplemented with values such as voltage and internal resistance for a more reliable assessment.
Currently, KW650 supports conventional lead-acid (Flooded/Wet) batteries; according to the manufacturer, support for AGM flat, AGM spiral, GEL, and EFB will be available via future updates. The device offers free upgrades and the ability to print data via PC (Windows). Menu languages include, among others, Swedish when app/firmware offers, as well as English, German, French, Dutch, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Japanese, Korean, and Persian. Would you like to supplement with a fault code reader for engine/emissions? See our category fault code readers. 🔋🔧
Introduction – What does the KW650 do?
The KONNWEI KW650 is a professional yet easy-to-use battery tester that combines three main functions: battery health, cranking test, and charging test (alternator/regulator). With a compact design, clear color screen, and intuitive menus, you get a reliable status of your battery and charging system in seconds. The built-in voltage logic and assessment against selected standards allow you to verify whether the problem lies in the battery, starter motor, cabling/connections, or the alternator.
6–16V operation: Powered directly from the battery – no internal batteries required.
2.4” color screen: Easy to read even in bright light; graphic voltage display.
100–2000 CCA: Wide working range, suitable for everything from small motorcycle batteries to more powerful 12V starter batteries.
Windows support: Free upgrades and print of test data via PC (XP/7/8/10).
Multi-language UI: 10+ languages – ideal for workshops and international environments.

Features & Applications
Battery Health: Quick status against selected standard – determines if the battery is serviceable or should be charged/replaced.
Cranking Test: Measures voltage dip and cranking time – reveals weak battery, bad cables, or heavy starter motor.
Charging Test: Analysis of alternator/regulator at idle and under load – detects under-/overcharging and ripple issues.
Graphic Voltage: Overview of voltage curve during starting and charging for more accurate assessment.
Pros & DIY: Suitable for workshops, car dealers, fleets, and home mechanics.
Documentation: Print via PC – save/print test reports for customer records.
Measurement Standards & Interpretation
The KW650 allows you to select the rating standard indicated on the battery label (e.g., CCA, EN, SAE, or DIN). Always use the same standard as the battery is marked with for a fair comparison.
CCA/SAE/EN/BCI/MCA: Common cranking current standards – often stated as ”xx CCA”.
DIN/IEC: Alternative European standards – often lower values than ”CCA” for the same battery.
JIS: Japanese standard – stated as, for example, 55D23L etc.; KW650 has JIS tables 26A17–245H52.
Tip: If the label lacks a clear standard – check the vehicle manufacturer's specification or the battery's datasheet.
Compatibility & Battery Types
System Voltage: 12V. Input range 6–16V. The KW650 works on common 12V lead-acid starting batteries. According to the manufacturer, Flooded/Wet is currently supported – and AGM flat/spiral, GEL, and EFB are planned to be supported via future updates. For best results: test the battery disconnected from the charger and after it has rested.
Flooded/Wet: Full support (starter batteries in car/motorcycle/boat/light truck, etc.).
AGM/GEL/EFB: Support planned via update – check current firmware.
Lithium (LiFePO4 etc.): Not intended – use dedicated lithium instrument/BMS data.
Manual & User Guide (step-by-step)
A. Safety & Preparations
Park safely, turn off the engine and all major loads (lights, fan, heater).
Inspect battery terminals/cables – clean oxidized surfaces for accurate measurement.
Let a newly charged battery rest for 20–30 min before testing for stable resting voltage.
B. Battery Health Test
Connect red clamp to + and black to −. The unit starts.
Select Battery Test → select battery type (Flooded) → select standard (e.g., CCA/EN/SAE/DIN) and enter the rated current from the label.
Start the test – wait for the result: Good / Recharge / Replace + measured values.
C. Cranking Test
Select Cranking Test. Follow the on-screen prompt and start the engine.
The KW650 measures voltage dip and cranking time – compares against reference values.
The result shows if the battery/connections meet the cranking current requirements.
D. Charging Test
Select Charging Test with the engine running.
Read the charging voltage at idle and with loads (lights, fan, defroster).
Assess the regulator: under-/overcharging, instability, or excessive ripple indicates alternator problems.
E. PC – Update & Print
Connect the KW650 to a PC (Windows XP/7/8/10) according to the included instructions.
Update firmware when available (for new languages/types).
Save/print reports for customer records or vehicle log.
Interpretation of Results
Good: The battery meets the requirements according to the selected standard. Still check the charging system if experiencing starting problems.
Recharge: Low state of charge. Maintenance charge and retest after resting. If ”Recharge” reappears → suspect an aging battery or parasitic drain.
Replace: Capacity/CCA is below acceptable level – battery replacement is recommended.
Tip: Always compare the health test with cranking (starting dip) and charging (charging voltage). Weak starting despite ”Good” may indicate bad battery terminals or starter motor. High/low charging voltage indicates regulator/alternator problems.
Troubleshooting – Common Symptoms
No power to the unit: Check terminal connection and ensure battery has > 6V.
Fluctuating results: Let the battery rest after charging; repeat the test. Ensure good terminal contact.
Poor starting but OK battery health: Check ground strap, positive cable, starter motor, engine oil (cold).
Undercharging: Charging voltage below reference → check belt tension, alternator, cabling.
Overcharging: Charging voltage above reference → regulator failure can damage the battery, rectify immediately.
