How to connect your ELM327 WiFi to your car

Guide: How to connect your ELM327 WiFi to your car

With an ELM327 WiFi scanner, you can diagnose and monitor your car using your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Follow the steps below to connect your ELM327 WiFi device to your car and start using it.

Step 1: Preparations

  1. Check car compatibility:
Ensure your car is OBD-II compatible. Most cars manufactured after 1996 (in the USA) or 2001 (in Europe) have an OBD-II port.

  2. Download a suitable app:
Install an app that supports ELM327 WiFi, such as:

    • Android: Torque, Car Scanner, Auto Doctor
    • iOS: OBD Fusion, Car Scanner
    • Windows: ScanMaster, ScanTool.net
  3. Charge your device:
Ensure your smartphone, tablet, or computer has sufficient battery.

Step 2: Connect the ELM327 to the car's OBD-II port

  1. Locate the OBD-II port:
Look for the port under the dashboard on the driver's side. If you have trouble finding it, consult your car's manual.

  2. Connect the ELM327 WiFi scanner:
Insert the ELM327 device into the OBD-II port. When properly connected, an indicator light should illuminate on the device.

Step 3: Connect to WiFi

  1. Start the car's ignition:
Turn on the car's ignition (without starting the engine) to activate the car's OBD system.

  2. Activate WiFi on your device:
Open the WiFi settings on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

  3. Connect to the ELM327 WiFi network:
The ELM327 device creates its own WiFi network. Look for a network named "OBDII", "ELM327", or similar, and connect to it.

  4. Enter password if necessary:
The default password for the WiFi connection is usually “12345678” or “00000000”. Check the manual if the default password does not work.

Step 4: Configure the app

  1. Open the app:
Launch the app you installed earlier.

  2. Set connection type:
Go to the app's settings and select WiFi as the connection type.

  3. Configure IP address and port:
Ensure the app's settings are correct:

    • IP address: 192.168.0.10 (default)
    • Port: 35000 (default)
  4. Test the connection:
Use the app's function to test the connection. If everything is configured correctly, the app should be able to communicate with your car.

Step 5: Use your ELM327 WiFi scanner

Once connected, you can use the app to:

  • Read diagnostic trouble codes and their meanings.
  • Clear trouble codes and turn off the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).
  • Monitor real-time sensor data, such as engine RPM, speed, fuel system status, and much more.

Troubleshooting (if needed)

  • Cannot connect to WiFi:
Ensure the ELM327 is properly connected and the car's ignition is on. Try reconnecting to the WiFi network.
  • No communication in the app:
Verify that the correct IP address and port are set. Also, ensure the app supports your car's protocol.
  • Connection frequently drops:
Try to keep the device close to the scanner for a stable WiFi signal.
