BMW Blue K DCAN USB Interface with Switch – K+DCAN USB Diagnostic Cable (FT232RL) for BMW 1998–2013

The K+DCAN USB Interface with a switch and original FTDI FT232RL chip is the classic diagnostic and coding cable for BMW 1998–2013 (E-series including late E-models with D-CAN). The cable offers full diagnostics and coding in PC programs such as EDIABAS/INPA, NCS Expert, WinKFP, Tool32, and more. Thanks to the built-in switch, you can toggle between K-Line and D-CAN (as well as manage specific pin combinations) ensuring both older K-line control units and newer CAN networks work correctly – without separate adapters.

Hardware facts: The FT232RL ensures stable drivers in Windows 7/8/10/11, low latency, and compatibility with well-known BMW tools. The interface supports D-CAN/PT-CAN (500 kbit/s), K-CAN (100 kbit/s), and classic K-Line. Connect via USB to your laptop and via 16-pin OBDII to the car. The cable can read/clear fault codes, run live data, perform adaptations, coding, and module programming (driver programming) – provided the correct software and data files are used.

Compatibility (selection): E60/E61, E90/E91/E92/E93, E81/E82/E87/E88, E70 X5, R56 MINI, etc. See the compatibility section for model years. Would you prefer wireless connection on your mobile? Compare with our Bluetooth/WiFi adapters or choose a handheld scanner.

Introduction

The K DCAN USB Interface for BMW is a "must-have" for anyone working with E-series BMW (and some MINI models). It combines K-Line for older control units with D-CAN for newer models (approx. 03/2007→) and provides full access to classic BMW tools. The switch allows you to quickly select the correct mode for each car/control unit – particularly useful when switching between early E46/E39 generations and late E9x/E60 platforms.

The interface can read/clear fault codes, run live data, adjust adaptations, code functions, and – with the right data, power support, and knowledge – even program individual modules. For programming, a battery maintainer (13.8–14.2 V) and strict adherence to the software's instructions are always recommended.

Manual & Installation Guide (Windows 10/11 + EDIABAS/INPA)

Preparation

  1. Install the FTDI driver (FT232RL) – Windows 10/11 often downloads automatically. Alternatively, use FTDI's official package.
  2. Install EDIABAS/INPA (and possibly NCS Expert, WinKFP, Tool32) according to legitimate instructions/licenses.
  3. Prepare the correct SP-daten for your model/model year.
  4. Have a battery maintainer connected during coding/programming.

Connect the cable

  1. Plug the USB into the computer – verify that the FTDI driver loads (Device Manager → Ports (COM & LPT)).
  2. Plug the OBD into the car's 16-pin DLC. Turn ignition ON (engine off).
  3. Set the switch to K-Line (older) or D-CAN (newer, e.g., E9x ≥ 03/2007).

COM port settings (recommended)

  1. Right-click on USB Serial Port (COMx) → Properties → Port Settings → Advanced.
  2. Set the COM number to a low value (e.g., COM1–COM9) to match the INPA configuration.
  3. Set Latency Timer to 1 ms (for lower delay).

EDIABAS/INPA

  1. Open INPA – confirm that black circles appear for ignition/communication.
  2. Select the correct model/series and ECU. Run diagnosis, read DTCs, live data, etc.
  3. For coding: start NCS Expert, read FA/VO, select module, code/write (save backup!).
  4. For programming: use WinKFP according to routine (correct ZUSB, data, charger connected).

After use

  1. End the session in the software. Turn off ignition.
  2. Unplug OBD and USB. Document changes (log/backup).

Troubleshooting – Common Scenarios

  • INPA does not see the car: Check COM number and Latency=1 ms. Try a different switch position (K-Line vs D-CAN).
  • Session interrupted: Use a quality USB port/cable, disable power saving, ensure stable battery voltage.
  • Coding fails: Incorrect SP-daten/CAFD/VO. Re-read VO, verify module list, write one module at a time.
  • WinKFP error: Check ZUSB match and correct data. Never interrupt during writing.
  • Newer model not communicating: May require ENET (G/F-series) – this cable is for the E-series.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What does the switch do?

It changes the cable's internal pin routing between K-Line and D-CAN (and handles specific BMW combinations) to access the correct bus.

2. Does the cable work on all BMWs?

Designed for the E-series from approx. 1998–2013. Newer F/G-series typically use ENET (Ethernet) or other interfaces.

3. Do I need to change the COM port?

Recommended. Set COM1–COM9 and Latency=1 ms for best compatibility with INPA/EDIABAS.

4. Can I program control units?

Yes, with WinKFP/Tool32 and the correct data/procedure. Always use a charger and follow the software's instructions carefully.

5. Does it read ABS/airbag?

Yes, generally via the BMW suite (not just OBD emissions). Access depends on the car and modules.

6. Do I need internet?

Not for the cable. However, the software may require licenses/data that are managed separately.

7. Can I use Mac/Linux?

Officially, Windows is supported. Some use VMs/Boot Camp; they are responsible for drivers/latency themselves.

8. How does K+DCAN compare to ENET?

K+DCAN is for the E-series (K-Line/D-CAN). ENET is faster and for F/G with Ethernet modules.

9. Is FT232RL important?

Yes – the FTDI chip provides stable drivers and proven compatibility with BMW tools.

10. Can I use my mobile phone?

The cable is USB-PC. For mobile apps, a BT/WiFi adapter is suggested – see Vgate/vLinker.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Backup before changes: Save VO/FA, read original values before coding.
  • One module at a time: Reduce risk and simplify troubleshooting.
  • Stable voltage: Charger during coding and especially during programming.
  • Correct data: Use SP-daten for your model/year. Do not mix region/engine family.
  • Document: Print report/log after action – facilitates restoration.
  • Compare alternatives: For simple fault code reading on your phone – Bluetooth/WiFi. For a standalone solution – handheld.

https://www.felkodslasare.se/products/k-dcan-usb-interface-med-switch-bmw-k-dcan-diagnoskabel

Tillsammans med appen:

Deep OBD for BMW
