KONNWEI KW218 – Multifunctional 6V/12V Battery Tester for AGM, GEL, EFB, and Lead-Acid (Car & Motorcycle)

Short Version

The KONNWEI KW218 is a compact and fast battery tester for both 6 V and 12 V starter batteries in cars, motorcycles, ATVs/UTVs, boats, lawnmowers, and other 12 V vehicles. The tester supports the most common battery technologies – lead-acid (flooded), AGM (flat/spiral), GEL, and EFB – and displays SOC/SOH (state of charge and state of health), CCA, internal resistance (mΩ), as well as a clear result: Good, Recharge, or Replace.

With a 2.4” color screen, English-friendly menu (8 languages available), and support for leading standards (CCA/BCI/CA/MCA/JIS/DIN/IEC/EN/SAE/GB), the KW218 provides professional precision at a price suitable for both workshops and home mechanics. It can test batteries in the vehicle (including a quick cranking test and charging system test) or removed from the vehicle.

No internal power is required – powered by the battery – making it ready to use immediately. Select battery type and standard, connect the clamps, and get accurate results in seconds. For motorcycles, there are also built-in motorcycle ratings which facilitate interpretation for smaller starter batteries.

Are you looking for a fast, reliable, and beginner-friendly battery tester that is still accurate enough for daily workshop operations? The KONNWEI KW218 is a very affordable choice.

Overview

The KONNWEI KW218 is a multifunctional battery and electrical system analyzer that provides immediate insight into the true condition of a starter battery. It measures the battery's voltage, internal resistance, calculates cold cranking amps (CCA), and determines SOC (State of Charge) and SOH (State of Health). In addition to the battery itself, you can also verify the starting process (cranking) and the alternator's charging – all via a clear 2.4” color screen.

Unlike simpler voltmeters, the KW218 describes why a battery is failing: too high internal resistance, too low CCA relative to the stated standard, or simply too low SOC that can be remedied by charging. The results are displayed as a summary rating (Good / Recharge / Replace) and supplemented with figures and graphs so you know exactly what you need to do next.

Features & Applications

  • Fast Battery Diagnostics: Clamp on, select battery type/standard, get results in seconds.
  • SOC/SOH in Percent: See charge status and health status at a glance.
  • Internal Resistance (mΩ): Reveals aging and sulfation not visible on a voltmeter.
  • Cranking Test: Measures voltage drop and current draw during starting – identify weak batteries/starter motor problems.
  • Charging System Test: Checks alternator/regulator (for low/high charging voltage or ripples).
  • MC Optimization: Built-in ratings for common MC batteries facilitate interpretation.
  • Waveform Display: Voltage curve during start and charge for easier troubleshooting.
  • Wide Battery Support: Flooded, AGM (flat/spiral), GEL, and EFB – from small MC batteries to larger car batteries.
  • Standard Compatibility: Select the correct scale (CCA/JIS/EN etc.) for accurate comparisons.
  • Portable & Durable: No charging needed, works in cold garages and in the field.

Advantages of KW218

  • Clear Message: Good / Recharge / Replace – save time on troubleshooting and decisions.
  • More than Volts: Internal resistance and CCA explain why the battery behaves as it does.
  • Inspection Aid: A healthy battery helps the ECU and emissions tests to perform stably.
  • For Workshop & DIY: Accurate enough for professionals, easy enough for beginners.
  • Economical: Avoid unnecessary battery replacement – recharge "Recharge" rated batteries and retest.

Compatibility

Voltage: 6 V and 12 V starter batteries. Works on passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, MC, ATV/UTV, small boats, scooters, garden machinery, etc.

Battery Types: Flooded (lead-acid), AGM (flat/spiral), GEL, EFB. Lithium/LiFePO4 is not supported by this instrument.

Standards: CCA, BCI, CA, MCA, JIS, DIN, IEC, EN, SAE, GB. Enter the battery's rating for best comparison.

Manual & Installation Guide

Preparations

  1. Turn off all consumers (lights, stereo, seat heating). Ignition off.
  2. Identify battery type (Flooded/AGM/GEL/EFB) and rated current (e.g., 600 CCA or JIS code).
  3. Ensure terminals are clean and dry for stable contact.

Standard Battery Test (Out of Vehicle)

  1. Connect red clamp to + and black clamp to .
  2. Select Battery TestOut of Vehicle.
  3. Select Battery Type (Flooded/AGM/GEL/EFB) and Standard (e.g., CCA/EN/JIS).
  4. Enter the battery's rated current (e.g., 600 CCA) or select the correct JIS code.
  5. Start the test. Read off SOC, SOH, CCA, , and result (Good/Recharge/Replace).

Battery Test In Vehicle (incl. cranking & charging)

  1. Connect the clamps to the battery. Select In Vehicle.
  2. First, perform a Battery Test according to the steps above.
  3. Then select Cranking Test. Start the engine when prompted – the unit measures voltage drop and cranking data.
  4. After starting, select Charging Test. Let the engine idle, turn on heavy loads (high beams, AC, rear defroster) if prompted.
  5. Read off the alternator's voltage level and any ripples/deviations.

Motorcycle Mode

  1. Select Motorcycle or the corresponding menu option.
  2. Select the correct battery type and optionally MC rating.
  3. Follow the standard test – the interpretation is adapted for small starter batteries.

Interpreting Results

  • Good: Battery is performing as expected. No action necessary.
  • Recharge: Low SOC – charge the battery with a suitable charger (AGM/GEL/EFB require the correct charge profile) and retest.
  • Replace: Low SOH, high internal resistance, or significantly reduced CCA – plan for battery replacement.
  • Cranking – low min. voltage (<~9.6 V): Possibly weak battery or heavy starter motor/friction.
  • Charging – too low (<13.2 V) / too high (>14.8 V): Check alternator, wiring, ground, and regulator.

Safety

  • Work in a ventilated environment. Avoid sparks near batteries.
  • Polarity-protected clamps reduce the risk of short circuit – keep them separate nonetheless.
  • Always connect + first, last. When disconnecting: the reverse.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does the KW218 work on AGM and EFB batteries?

Yes, select the correct battery type in the menu for the correct algorithm and interpretation.

Can I test the battery without disconnecting it?

Yes. Use In Vehicle and perform the battery, cranking, and charging tests in sequence.

Does the device only show volts?

No. You also get internal resistance, SOC, SOH, CCA, and a diagnosis (Good/Recharge/Replace).

How do I know which standard (CCA/EN/JIS) to choose?

Read the battery's label. If there are several values, choose the standard specified, e.g., EN 620 A.

Is lithium/LiFePO4 supported?

No, the KW218 is designed for lead-based starter batteries (Flooded/AGM/GEL/EFB).

Can I save or print reports?

The KW218 displays and summarizes on the screen. For printing/logging requirements, a more advanced model with PC/App support is recommended.

Does it detect poor ground cables?

Indirectly: abnormal voltage drop/ripples in the charging test can indicate ground faults or cable problems.

Tips & Advice

  • Charge first – then retest. Many “Replace” become “Good” after a full charge with the correct charge profile.
  • AGM/GEL require the correct charger. Avoid standard “wet” mode on advanced batteries.
  • Short drives? Regularly maintain charge to avoid sulfation and high internal resistance.
  • For seasonal storage (MC/boat): maintenance charging & temperature control extends lifespan.
  • Match the stated standard: do not measure a JIS battery against CCA if JIS is specified; choose the same scale.
